Can Duty Responsibilities

What do I do with all these cans?

To satisfy your can duty requirement your family must:

- Oversee the aluminum can recycling for the complete two-week period.

- Remove and dispose of any trash in and around the collection points during the two-week period.

- Collect and redeem the aluminum from any collection point before it is full or overflowing.

- Collect and redeem the aluminum from all four collection points at least once during the final 4 days of your assigned two-week period.

Where are the can collection points?

Ray's Market…… 1750 Commerce Drive, North Mankato

(Southwest corner of parking lot by Wells Fargo Bank)

Lor Ray Deli Mart…… .1711 Lor Ray Drive, North Mankato

(Southwest corner of parking lot by dumpster)

Hy-Vee Downtown…….. 410 South Riverfront Drive , Mankato

(North parking lot, behind the store)

American Legion Post 11…….222 E Walnut, Mankato

(In the back by the dumpster)

Where is the trailer?

The trailer is located at Ray's Market and is used as the can corral.

What do I need to pull the can trailer?

A two-inch ball hitch and a standard four prong flat trailer plug (for lights).

What keys do I need and where do I get them?

You will need two keys, one for the various Master Locks on the trailer and can corrals, the other is for the wheel lock on the trailer. Howard Dittrich has several sets of keys for use.

Do I need any tools or anything to make the job easier?

A garden rake to hook the bags in the trailer is helpful or you can jump in the trailer and throw them out. In addition, a big bucket or a recycling bin works well for scooping the cans from the collection points. Rip open all the bags and remove the garbage at the collection points. Then when you get to Gopher State , pull onto the scale and get the vehicle and trailer weighed (stay in your vehicle). Then back into the building and dump the cans directly onto the conveyer (keep any kids away from the conveyer). If it is really busy, you may have to unhook the trailer and push it into the building. Then get the trailer and vehicle weighed again, park your car and go inside the building, ask the clerk for a check made out to Troop 4.

After collecting the cans, where do we redeem them?

You can redeem cans at Gopher State Scrap Metal Inc. 804 Industrial Rd, Mankato or Mankato Iron & Metal Inc. 215 W Elm St Mankato. Experience has shown it is easier at Gopher State Scrap.

What do I do with the money from the cans?

Have the recycling center give you a check made out to Troop 4. At the end of your two week period, give the check along with the weight slips to Howard Dittrich.

How do I get credit for doing Can Duty?

After you have completed your two-week can duty period, give Howard Dittrich all the checks received plus any keys borrowed. He will confirm the completion and advise the Treasurer to credit your Scout account $25.00.
